“The Peacock Flies Southeast” tells the tragic love story of Jiao Zhongqing and Liu Lanzhi, a deeply devoted and harmonious couple. Unfortunately, Jiao’s mother disliked Liu Lanzhi and eventually forced her to return to her parents’ home, where her brother pressured her to remarry. In the end, the couple chose to end their lives together, creating a poignant tale of love and sacrifice. The excerpt “The Bridal Chamber” portrays the sweet moments of Jiao Zhongqing and Liu Lanzhi’s wedding night and their hopes for a bright future together. “The Marriage Proposal” is a scene from the classic opera “The Butterfly Lovers”. On the Qiqiao Festival, Zhu Yingtai hears news of a suitor arriving and believes it to be Liang Shanbo, filling her heart with joy. To her dismay, the suitor turns out to be Ma Wencai, the wealthy and influential son of Governor Ma. Yingtai refuses the proposal and reveals her love for Liang Shanbo. However, her father, valuing wealth and status, insists on the match with the Ma family. “Longing for the Past” (Sifan) is a famous Kunqu opera excerpt from the early Qing Dynasty play “Niehai Ji” (“The Record of a Sinful Sea”). It tells the story of Se Kong, a young nun who was sent to the Xiantao Convent as a child due to her frail health. As she grows older, she becomes weary of the lonely life of chanting scriptures and praying. Longing for love and companionship, she takes advantage of her master and fellow nuns’ absence to secretly flee the convent and descend the mountain in search of a life partner. The Ottawa Chinese Music Ensemble was originally founded by renowned pipa player Ms. Guan Yadong. It is an artistic group dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese music culture, composed of musicians and enthusiasts passionate about folk music. The ensemble focuses on traditional Chinese instruments while incorporating diverse musical elements, resulting in a rich and varied performance style that both preserves classical pieces and emphasizes innovation. The ensemble is active throughout Ottawa and surrounding areas, showcasing the unique charm of Chinese folk music through concerts, community events, and cultural exchanges, thus building a bridge for cultural integration between East and West.

Xu Yanqing, a guzheng player who was previously a member of the Central South University Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble, performed with guitarist Furui Huang and erhu player Sam Liu as part of the “Rhyme from Ottawa” ensemble during the cultural festival. Together, they presented a fusion performance of two pieces, “My Heart Will Go On” and “Liuyang River”, blending Chinese and Western musical styles.

The Peking and Kunqu Opera Troup in Ottawa is composed of enthusiasts of Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera, gathering cultural and art lovers from the capital region of Canada. The workshop engages in long-term online learning with professional instructors from China, focusing on preserving and promoting traditional Chinese opera. Through systematic professional guidance, participants deeply explore the performing arts of Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera, including skills such as vocal techniques, physical movements, and stage steps. The workshop is dedicated to promoting Chinese opera culture overseas, showcasing the unique charm of this national art form.

Joy Together Cultural Arts Group

The Joy Together Cultural Arts Group was established in early 2020. The members are all seniors aged 60 and above, with the oldest being 83 years old. Over the years, they have learned many famous hulusi pieces, such as “Girls Are Born to Sing,” “Wedding Oath,” “Beautiful Grassland,” and others. Today, they are performing one of the most representative pieces, “Bamboo Under the Moonlight.”
众乐乐文化艺术团葫芦丝演出队成立于2020年初 队员的年龄都是60岁以上的老人 其中最大的83岁。在几年的时间里学会了很多葫芦丝名曲 比如《姑娘生来爱唱歌》《婚誓》《草原美》…..等 还有今天为大家演奏的 最具代表性的《月光下的凤尾竹》。

As a disciple of the renowned Chinese ethnic wind instrument performer and composer Mr. Wang Houcheng, Guojun Zhang is a member of the China Hulusi Bawu Society. He is a gold medalist in the first Hulusi competition in Heilongjiang Province and an outstanding instructor in the Hulusi program at the China Conservatory of Music.
中国著名民族管乐演奏家、作曲家王厚臣先生的弟子，中国葫芦丝巴乌学会会员，黑龙江省首届葫芦丝大赛金奖获得者，中国音乐学院葫芦丝专业优秀指导教师。
Lanling Qin Yuan

Lanling Qin Yuan the Guzheng School was founded by Teacher Cathy Xia in 2000 and relocated to Ottawa, the capital of Canada, in 2019. It focuses on teaching the guzheng and guqin with the mission is to preserve and promote the cultural arts, allowing students to experience the beauty of Chinese music and the profoundness of Chinese culture on their fingertips.
Teacher Xia graduated from the Music Department of Ningxia University, majoring in guzheng. She is currently a Canadian National Guzheng Heritage Ambassador, a member of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society, and a member of the China Guqin Art Association. Her teaching system is mature and comprehensive. Her students have participated in various domestic and international performances and competitions, winning numerous awards. Lanling Qin Yuan provides a platform for guzheng and guqin enthusiasts to exchange ideas and is dedicated to spreading traditional Chinese culture!
兰陵琴苑由Cathy夏老师创办于2000年并于2019年移至加拿大首都渥太华，专注古筝和古琴教学。宗旨是传承与弘扬中华文化，在指尖中感受中国音乐的美与中国文化的博大精深。夏老师毕业于宁夏大学音乐系主修古筝专业，现任加拿大国筝传承大使，中国民族管弦乐学会会员、中国古琴艺术协会会员，教学体系成熟完善，带领的学生多次参加各种国内外的演出和比赛并屡获殊荣。兰陵琴苑为热爱古筝和古琴爱好者提供交流平台，并致力于中国传统文化的传播！
